The beer belly is a very common term, and one would not fault you if you believe it means that the belly, the paunch is caused by beer – too much beer! If you look closely though, not all beer drinkers have the belly. So why do some men, or women, develop them? And is it possible to lose it?
First, the belly is created by calories, or to be more precise, the extra calories no longer required after you achieved your calorie requirement intake. The culprits are frequently alcohol, or other sugary drinks and foods. However, the belly is usually more or less associated with the calories from alcohol, because when a person drinks alcohol, the liver burns the alcohol instead of fat.
Second, there are foods to go along with the beer at the party or dinner, like fried chicken wings, pizza and other deep-fried foods, so it just compounds to the surplus of calories. To add fuel to fire, a typical can of beer packs 150 calories. Since a person can drink more than several at any one time, this means there is an overwhelming excess of calories being consumed in total…
The danger of those fats in the belly is too high to ignore, with risks of health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and of course heart attacks. All those visceral fats hidden within the abdominal cavity that surrounds your other internal organs are ticking time bombs.
Michael Jensen from the Mayo Clinic has this magic numbers as a guideline:
“When waist circumference exceeds 35 inches for women and 40 for men, it is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and overall mortality.”
And here are the tried-and-tested ways to lose that belly and claim your life back:
Calories – Cut it down. Avoid binge drinking and consumption of all those fried food together at the same time. It will definitely not be fun, but you really got to limit the beers. One tip here is to drink a glass of water after every beer. This further reduces the space for further beers and other foods.
Exercise – To really lose the belly, you need to lose the weight. Exercises such as crunches or other abdominal ones only serves to strengthen the core muscles. When you lose weight, you will realise the belly is getting trim, which is good news, because the visceral fat is getting burnt off, as those fats are more metabolically active, and thus can be easily broken down and used.
At the end of the day, drink moderately and strive for a healthy lifestyle so that you can enjoy more wonderful years ahead.
I’m an old-fashioned guy… I want to be an old man with a beer belly sitting on a porch, looking at a lake or something.
