2 Ways To Clean Your Fruits And Vegetables

This is something you may do everyday, something that ought to be an automatic reaction – and that is washing fruits and vegetables in water for 10 to 15 seconds before you process them further {though that is not sufficient}. However it is even more imperative that you wash them cleanly this day. In a bid to produce more healthy crops, especially when the fickle weather climate is affecting harvest, farmers need to make sure that their crops are ALL healthy and fit for consumption.

Rachel Carson herself raised the alarm many years back, though she was focused on the effects of pesticides on nature itself. Fast forward to this day now, the threat is still hovering around.

If you’re lucky, you may just suffer a mild stomachache when you inadvertently ingested some diarrhea-causing bacteria from unwashed produce. If you’re unlucky, you may even contract leukemia and cancer from all those pesticide exposure, no joke about it.

While it is easy to wash off surface dirt or soil from the produce, how then can you wash off pesticides, or even bacteria? Here’s how:

For Normal Produce:

Soak fruits and vegetables for about 5 minutes in a diluted solution of salt, baking soda or vinegar.

You may also rinse them under running water for 30 seconds in a thorough manner.

(If you are concerned about wasting water for those 30 seconds, why not collect the running water and use it to rinse your yard or corridor? It’s a win-win situation: keeping your food stuff clean and also daily cleaning the area.)

For Waxy Produce:

This refers to hard fruits and vegetables like carrots, lemons, apples, potatoes etc. They need to be cleaned more because they hold on to pesticides better than other softer kinds of food stuff.

Wash thoroughly with running water for about 30 seconds. Next, use a produce brush to scrub them clean.

There are also other food wash products on the market. They are easy to use and give you a peace of mind. You can get them here.

But of course, it doesn’t just end there. Kitchen utensils can also cross contaminate the bacteria and spread easily, so you have to wash them after every use, or in between uses. One tip is to keep separate utensils for vegetables, fruits and meats, depending on the practicality for your own household.
